After the laboratory was relocated, the idle hall was renovated by ALARKO Holding and opened on May 23, 1998.
This hall, with a capacity of 100 people, where faculty members could rest during lunch hours and meet with students, was named after Mr. Dr. Üzeyir GARİH, a 1951 graduate of ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Meetings and social events were held in this hall, which featured a Bosphorus view, wooden floors, a fireplace, a suspended ceiling, and air conditioning.
“İTÜ Makina Mühendisliği Fakültesi’nden mezun oldum. Fakültem gerek iş ve gerek sosyal hayatımda başarılı olmam için gereken birçok bilgiyi verdi. Bu nedenden dolayı öğretim üyelerime bir kez daha şükranlarımı sunmak istiyorum” (Dr. Üzeyir Garih’in 23 Mayıs 1998’de İTÜ Üzeyir Garih Salonu açılışında yaptığı konuşmasından)

Finally, it took its current form through the Support Foundation in 2023, with the opening ceremony attended by the Chairman of the Board, Mr. İzzet Garih, on December 21, 2023.
Born in Istanbul in 1929, he graduated from ITU as a Mechanical M.Sc. Engineer in 1951. Until 1954, he worked as an HVAC Engineer at the Carrier Corp. Turkey Branch and became an expert in the field. In 1954, upon Ishak ALATON's proposal, he started operating as a co-partner of the two-person Alarko Collective Company. From that date on, he uninterruptedly co-chaired the Alarko Group of Companies, which grew day by day into a Holding.
Apart from his roles at Alarko, he played active roles on the administrative and advisory boards of local and foreign foundations and associations such as TÜSİAD, MESS, Loyd Foundation, SİSAV, Propeller, Istanbul Chamber of Industry Assembly, Tourism Investors Association, AIESEC, and chaired the Turkish-Belgian DEİK and TOKYAD.
His weekly articles on management, organization, and economics were published in newspapers like Radikal, Turkish Daily News, Milliyet, and Akşam, alongside monthly columns in Sigorta and Babıali magazines. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by ITU in 1984 and assumed the role of Honorary Consul General of the Philippines in Istanbul in 1990.
One of Üzeyir Garih's leading hobbies was engaging in the education of young people and giving conferences in various venues. In addition to his six-volume series "Deneyimlerim" and his book "İş Hayatımdan Kesitler", where he shared his experiences, a collection of eight books compiled from the "Deneyimlerim" series was published under the title "Üzeyir Garih Kitaplığı".
He passed away on August 25, 2001, following a heinous attack. He spoke English, French, and Spanish, was married, and had two children and six grandchildren.
