Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is located in the heart of Istanbul, within the historic Gümüşsuyu Barracks, which were built between 1850 and 1862 during the Ottoman period by Sarkis Balyan. In 1944, the institution officially became the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and has since educated leading mechanical engineers who have made significant contributions to our country.

The Istanbul Technical University Gümüşsuyu Campus includes an indoor sports hall, artificial turf football field, tennis courts, laboratory buildings, and student dormitories. Located in the center of Istanbul on the slope descending from Taksim to Beşiktaş, the campus offers a magnificent view of Istanbul and the Bosphorus. Dolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul Naval Museum, Military Museum, the Beşiktaş and Kabataş ferry piers, Akaretler Row Houses, and many other important landmarks are all within walking distance. On the Bosphorus-facing side of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering building, there is a curved staircase featuring Baroque-style architecture, a uniquely beautiful historic library, and many nostalgic classrooms.

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is a branch of engineering that combines the principles of engineering physics and engineering mathematics with materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Being one of the fundamental engineering branches, perhaps the most comprehensive, it provides a solid foundation in engineering formation.

Mechanical engineers carry out the design, control, production, and efficiency calculations of mechanical, thermal, and fluid components and systems for vehicles and systems such as production facilities, industrial equipment, machinery, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, transportation systems, aircraft, automotive, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, etc.

Mechanical engineering is the application of engineering principles and problem-solving techniques for the product to be developed (device, machine, etc.), spanning from design to manufacturing and the market. Almost every product or service in modern life has probably been touched by a mechanical engineer in one way or another. This also includes solving today's problems and creating future solutions in areas like healthcare, energy, transportation, space exploration, climate change, and many others.

Career Opportunities for Mechanical Engineers

Mechanical engineers possess comprehensive knowledge in materials science, mechanics and strength of materials, powertrains, engines and machine elements, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, theory of machines, vibrations and acoustics, manufacturing methods (casting, welding, molding, etc.), mechatronics, robotics, system dynamics and control, computer technology, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

They can pursue careers in the automotive, aerospace, and maritime industries; the defense sector; robotics and automation systems; energy (petrochemical, thermal, hydraulic, wind, solar, nuclear, bioenergy, etc.); pharmaceuticals; food; textiles; HVAC and building services (HVAC, natural gas installations, cold storage facilities, etc.); as well as in universities, research centers, and government institutions. Their scope of work ranges from designing engines, power plants, and robots to developing heating and cooling systems, manufacturing processes, and even micro- and nanotechnology.

Our graduates can choose to pursue their master’s and doctoral studies not only in Turkey but also at leading global universities, including MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Caltech, Princeton, Michigan, Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, Technical University of Munich, and École Polytechnique. Those who choose the private sector path can continue their careers as CEOs, General Managers, Board Members, Directors, Managers, and Engineers at Turkey's most prominent industrial institutions within sectors such as the Defense Industry (TEI, Aselsan, Turkish Aerospace Industries...), the Automotive Industry (Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota...), and White Goods/Home Appliances (Arçelik, Siemens, Bosch...).
