Prof. Dr. Levent Trabzon Received an Award at IAM2021

In the International Innovation Competition 2021 (IAM2021) held in Malaysia and attended by 1,267 participants from 9 countries, our TÜBİTAK-funded project number of 218M528 and entitled “Development of Microfluidic-Based Portable Test Kit for Aflatoxin Detection in Liquid Foods,” won first place in the international category as the first and only project from Turkey. It was also classified as ‘The best of the best Innovation Award’ and ‘Gold Award’.

Our Project is Supported by Qatar University IRCC (International Research Co-Funding Cooperation Program)

The Project titled “Design of Versatile Nano- Hybrid Reverse Osmosis Membranes for Seawater Desalination” funded by under the Qatar University IRCC (International Research Co-Fund Collaboration Program) and under a joint supervision and direction of Prof. Syed Javaid Zaidi of Qatar University and Prof. Levent Trabzon of Istanbul Techical University. The aim of the project is to develop nano-enhanced high efficient reversed osmosis membrane system.

Our project is supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Iran (MSRT) within the scope of the Bilateral Cooperation Program

The project titled ‘Experimental and numerical investigation of electrohydrodynamic based active micromixer’ was funded by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) within the frame of bi-lateral cooperation between Iran Science, Technology and Innonation Ministry (MSRT) and TUBITAK. The Project is about development of new micropump technology and it is coordinated and managed by Prof. Dr. Levent Trabzon from Mechanical Engineering Department at ITU and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ghader Karimian Khosroshahi from University of Tabriz.

The project titled ‘Integrated Microfluidic System to Capture Circulating Tumor Cells by Ferromagnetic Nano-clusters in Si’ was funded by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) within the frame of bi-lateral cooperation between The Ministry of Innovative Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan (MID Uzbekistan) and TUBITAK. The Project is about development of lab-on-a-chip system to capture rare cancer cells from the blood sample. The project is coordinated and managed by Prof. Dr. Levent Trabzon from Mechanical Engineering Department at ITU and Prof. Dr. M. Kabir Bakhadirkhanov from Tashkent State Technical University.

Assoc. Dr. Emrecan Söylemez's Project is Supported by TÜBİTAK

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrecan SOYLEMEZ’S “Numerical Sintering Simulation for Binder Jetting Additive Manufacturing” titled projected has been supported by TUBITAK 3501 – Career Development Program. Project partners are Asst. Prof. Dr. Recep Onler as a researcher, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ilkay Oksuz and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nuri Solak as advisors. Project will focus on understanding and modeling the sintering behavior of binder jet additively manufactured parts.

HeatReFlex: Green and Flexible District Heating/Cooling in Turkey Project

Prof. Dr. Ayşegül ABUŞOĞLU focuses on an international project titled "HeatReFlex: Green and Flexible District Heating/Cooling in Turkey" in collaboration with Aalborg University, Danish Energy Agency, İTÜ, Gazi University, and Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality. This project will lay the foundation for a future bottom-up energy system based on renewables, communities (from building-level up to cities and beyond), and flexibility providing better user motivation/engagement, stability, and transition to sustainability in Turkey to meet the climate commitments and improve economic competitiveness by employing the Danish experience on efficient heating technologies. The project will also develop a technical framework for optimal planning and operation of thermal energy devices and processes in small to large-scale energy communities supporting distributed heating/cooling generation, storage, conversion, and flexibility concerning the technical constraints, regulations, and policies. Within this project, heat-electricity nexus (such as converting excess electric power to heat), particularly when the electric balancing requirements become more stringent in the presence of variable renewables, will be studied. As the "HeatReFlex" project director of İTÜ leg, Prof. Dr. Ayşegül ABUŞOĞLU is researching on Waste-to-Energy based district heating and cooling scenarios and power production. With two separate research groups in the scope of the project, she is developing national inventories in addition to developing scenarios based on municipal solid waste, wastewater, sewage sludge, etc., for improving the country's current waste management. In Vıtro Analysıs Of Antı-Fungal Actıvıty And Mechanical Properties of Soft Primer Material Added to Natural Product Extracts

Within the scope of the study, minimum inhibition concentration and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of propolis and mahaleb extracts were determined by microdilution method using 96-well microplates. Candida albicans ATCC 10231 standard strain was used in the study. Chlorhexidine (0.2%) was preferred as the control group. According to the data obtained from the minimum inhibition concentration experiment, it was determined that propolis extracts were fungicidal and mahalep extracts were fungistatic. In the light of this information, within the scope of the project, propolis was added to the silicone-based soft lining material with the aim of providing antimicrobial property by providing encapsulation of plant or plant origin natural product extracts such as Allium sativum (garlic), Cerasus mahaleb (mahlep), Thymus vulgaris (thyme) by spray drying. With these new additives, the strength tests of the prosthetic material were successfully carried out.

Y25-Type H Bogie Design of Esray Has Been Completed in a Joint Study with Faculty Members from ITU Faculty Of Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of Biomechanics and Strength of Materials Under the Scope of an R&D Project

A non-conventional design and structural evaluation of a Y25-Type Freight Wagon Bogie frame, which is also suitable for use with 25t axles, has been completed in a joint study among design department of ESRAY Makina Otomotiv İnşaat San. ve Tic. A.Ş. and Faculty members from ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of Biomechanics and Strength of Materials under the scope of an İTÜNOVA TTO R&D Project. The first prototype is now being built for certification tests that will be held in Czech Republic.

Biomechanical Effects and Fracture Characteristics in Different Filling and Fixation Methods Applied to Various Proximal Tibial Metaphyseal Defect Sizes

In this study, which was carried out jointly by ITU, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Biomechanics and Strength Laboratory and Istanbul Basaksehir Pine and Sakura City Hospital, Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic, the cementation and internal fixation methods applied to bone defects of varying sizes after proximal tibial resection were biomechanically compared and the biomechanical method of the ideal fixation method according to the defect size was determined. It is intended to be explained by tests. Cement filling and plate fixation groups were found to have the highest failure load in all defect sizes. Cement+screw combination below 25% defect size reduces the risk of tibial plateau and metaphyseal fractures. It was also determined that fracture complexity was significantly related to defect size and fixation method. The study made a significant contribution to the literature. Because the distal femur and proximal tibia are the most common localizations of locally aggressive bone tumors, it is vital to determine effective treatment methods.

At ITU Mechanical Engineering Faculty More than 40 Graduate Thesis Studies Have Been Completed in 2021

Postgraduate thesis studies were carried out in Heat Fluid Master’s, Solid Object Mechanics Master's, Construction Master's, Machine Dynamics, Vibration and Acoustics Master's, Materials and Manufacturing Master's, Automotive Master's, System Dynamics and Control Master's and Mechanical Engineering Doctorate Programs within the scope of ITU Graduate School Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 2021, 42 postgraduate thesis studies were successfully completed. Congratulations to our successful graduates and academicians.

The second edition of Assist. Prof. Adil YÜCEL's MATLAB book is printout

The author of the book, Assist. Prof. Adil YÜCEL is a faculty member who has been interested in programming since his secondary school years and has proven himself with his studies on this subject. The idea of writing a book, which was born while sharing his experiences with his students, from the first days he started teaching programming related courses, resulted in this book. In this book, Assist. Prof. Adil YÜCEL aims to provide engineering students with a basic programming background beyond explaining the use of the MATLAB programming package. The book has been prepared to provide students the ability to develop algorithms to help them solve the problems they encounter, by giving them numerical analysis knowledge. We believe that this book, which includes examples of mathematics, engineering, and mechanical applications, which are not very common in similar books, will be very useful to students.

Achievement of Prof. Dr. Levent Trabzon and His Students

Microchannel Having a Spiral Geometry Structured with Asymmetrical Curls for Continuous Separation of Cancer Cells from Blood and Enrichment Thereof in the Circulatory System” was patented by US Patent Office with a patent number of 11,161,113 B2. This study is a product of B.Sc. graduation thesis by Samir Jaber and Utku Mustafa Sönmez under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Levent Trabzon.
